La petite mort, también conocida como "La pequeña muerte" o "La petite mort" en francés, hace referencia al período refractorio que ocurre después del orgasmo sexual. Este término ha sido interpretado generalmente para describir a la pérdida del estado de conciencia o desvanecimiento post-orgásmico que sufren las personas en algunas experiencias sexuales.
De manera más amplia se puede referir al gasto espiritual que ocurre luego del orgasmo, o a un corto período de melancolía o trascendencia, como resultado del gasto de la "fuerza de vida".

More widely, it can refer to the spiritual release that comes with
orgasm or to a short period of melancholy or transcendence as a result
of the expenditure of the "life force", the feeling which is caused by the release of oxytocin in the brain after the occurrence of orgasm. Literary critic Roland Barthes spoke of la petite mort as the chief objective of reading literature. He metaphorically used the concept to describe the feeling one should get when experiencing any great literature.
